PROTECT V™
PROTECT™V vapour-phase carbon adsorber canisters are air or vapour treatment units for use in applications requiring high pressures or slight vacuum conditions. PROTECT™ V canisters contain all of the operating elements required for utilization of granular activated carbon in air or vapour treatment, including a flat carbon bed support across the entire bed’s cross-sectional area and plenum area below this support for effective air introduction and distribution across the bed. The canisters are constructed of unlined carbon steel with a stainless steel screen bed support for use with activated carbon in air treatment.
PROTECT™V vapour-phase carbon adsorber canisters are available in two convenient sizes that will contain 1,000 or 2,000 pounds of granular activated carbon for treating air or vapour sources typically up to 750 cfm at pressures up to 15 psig and up to 15 inches of mercury of vacuum.
PROTECT™V vapour-phase adsorbers can be provided with any of Continental Carbon Group’s wide variety of vapour-phase activated carbon products that can be selected for a specific air or vapour treatment application.
Pressure Drop Curve
Pressure drop through a PROTECT™V canister is a function of the process airflow. If higher flows or lower pressure drop are needed, multiple canisters can be installed in parallel operation. The maximum pressure in the canister should not exceed 15 psig, regardless of the pressure drop across the unit.
Carbon Exchange or Replacement
When the treated air or vapour exceeds the desired contaminant concentration, the granular activated carbon in the PROTECT™V canister should be replaced with fresh activated carbon. The canister is to be isolated from the process by either closing and locking the inlet and outlet valves, or physically disconnecting the canister from the inlet and outlet pipe or hose. The carbon exchange procedure can either take place where the canister is installed, or the disconnected canister can be moved to another location for this activity.

HIGH FLOW VENTSORB® Emission Control Unit
Continental Carbon Group’s High Flow VENTSORB® (HFVS) emission control units were developed to utilize granular activated carbon to treat air/vapour containing volatile organic compounds (VOC), acid gases, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and other contaminant emissions from a variety of applications at industrial and commercial sites. There are four sizes available to treat airflows up to 3,000 cfm in a single system. These units are designed to allow selection of the optimal size to economically solve air treatment needs and are constructed with features that allow for ease of installation and operation.
The HFVS units are available in four canister sizes: 500 cfm, 1,000 cfm, 2,000 cfm, and 3,000 cfm. The units are constructed of carbon steel with an internal epoxy lining and external coating
Benefits & Features
- Easy to install – the HFVS is fitted with forklift provisions for ease of off-loading and positioning near the emission source.
- Ready to use – The units are delivered preloaded with granulated active carbon (GAC) to minimize labour costs for set-up.
- Available with a fan and skid for a complete adsorption system.
- Optimum design – the HFVS units are designed to optimize the amount of GAC installed in each unit, considering the airflow requirements, available space, and low system pressure drop.
- Reusable unit – When the GAC in the HFVS is spent and cannot remove additional contaminants, it can be easily removed and refilled using the large 20″ diameter man-way installed on the top of the unit.
- Corrosion-resistant – The HFVS units are constructed of epoxy-lined and painted carbon steel with a stainless steel bed support.
- Effective treatment of a wide variety of contaminants – the HFVS can be filled with different types of GAC to provide treatment tailored to your specific requirements.
- Continuous treatment – the HFVS unit works 24 hours per day to remove contaminants from air emissions regardless of fluctuations of airflow rate.
- Flexibility to meet a variety of needs– The HFVS unit requires relatively little space. When necessary, the units can be installed side by side then piped for either series or parallel operation.
- Continental Carbon Group’s larger HECA or HDB units should be considered if higher flows or high concentrations of contaminants are involved.
- Purchase or lease options are available.
HDB/HECA Deep Bed Adsorbers
Description
Continental Carbon Group deep bed activated carbon adsorbers are designed for greater than 99.9% removal of corrosive gases, volatile organic compounds (VOC), odours, and other hazardous chemical applications where high airflow or high contaminate concentrations exist. To minimize service costs, deep bed adsorbers are sized to provide an approximate annual quantity of activated carbon for the removal of specified contaminants.
Configurations
The standard configuration for a deep bed carbon adsorber is a horizontal bed (HDB) of 2 to 5 feet deep. To assist in long fan life, systems are designed to pull air through the bed and are generally equipped with pre-and-post-particulate filters. For applications where a minimum equipment footprint and/or low-pressure drop is needed, we also offer our HECA deep bed carbon adsorber, which utilizes a vertical bed design. Standard dimensions and pressure drop data are provided in the linked brochure.
Applications
Corrosive Gas Elimination
Designed to purify inlet airstreams for pressurization of rooms in which sensitive electronic and mechanical equipment is located. The most accepted method of attaining a purified air stream is to use a deep bed carbon adsorber filled with specially treated activated carbon to remove the corrosive gases. A properly designed adsorber will be able to reduce corrosive gas levels to the point where they are not a factor in equipment failure. All corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen chloride, chlorine, etc., are removed at 99.9% efficiency with correct carbon selection.
Hazardous Chemical And VOC Control
Our deep bed carbon adsorbers are easily modified for a variety of other applications including atmospheric emission control and personnel protection. These durable activated carbon systems are available over a flow range of 100 to 20,000 cfm with flexibility to allow you to adapt to constantly changing regulations from local Air Pollution Control District (APCD), EPA Air Quality Act, OSHA Regulations, EPA NESHAP’s regulations, and ASHRAE’s Indoor Air Quality Standards.
Odour Control
Ninety percent of a person’s life is spent indoors. Studies have shown that in many commercial, industrial, and public buildings levels of nuisance odours and pollutants such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) can be two to five times greater indoors than outdoors. Odours and irritants increase business costs through productivity losses, sick days, and medical expenses as well as employee and community concerns and complaints. Deep bed units can remove 99.9% of H2S as well as other odors with correct activated carbon selection.
Other Applications
With over 500 different carbon products available, Continental Carbon Group will design a system for you to meet any contaminate concerns. We provide the greatest level of technical support from application computer modelling to laboratory performance testing to pilot units for field testing. Many of our deep bed systems and carbon solutions are custom-tailored to your exact requirements.
Assured Performance
The complete deep bed carbon units, including dust filter, carbon section, final filter, and blower, are available in capacities from 100 to 20,000 cfm and may be customized with respect to carbon bed depth, guard beds, dampers, pressure gauges, etc., to meet your requirements.
Deep bed adsorbers operate in one of three modes: outside air only, full recirculation, and recirculation with outside air make-up. They provide greater than 99.9% removal. Provisions to preclude bypass in the unlikely event of bed settling are incorporated in the design. The system utilizes a gasketless, continuously welded housing of high-quality stainless steel to preclude the bypass of contaminated air around the carbon bed. The fan assembly comes with a severe-duty, high-efficiency motor. Motor speeds are kept to a minimum to ensure quiet operation and maximum life.
The deep bed low maintenance, activated carbon adsorber system is also configured to enable you to monitor carbon usage and take the guesswork out of determining the remaining carbon bed life. Sample ports upstream can be used to test for inlet corrosive gas concentrations, while the downstream sample port indicates final outlet concentrations. Three sample ports located evenly throughout the carbon bed indicate the location of the mass transfer zone and the remaining amount of unused activated carbon in the system.
