Maintain Your Aging Dust Collector with Connected Monitoring

Regular monitoring and maintenance checks can keep dust collectors in good working condition for years.

High-quality, industrial-grade dust collectors are designed to last and support facility filtration for many years. Over those years, most facilities have experienced maintenance team turnover, so these aging dust collectors are frequently inherited by new teams who are looking for innovative ways to keep them performing efficiently, effectively, and within budget.

Donaldson Addresses Fabricators’ Needs with the New Torit® Fume Hood

AST Canada installs the Torit® Fume Hood where a versatile hood is required to add at-source-extraction capabilities for manual or robotic welding applications.

The Donaldson Torit® Fume Hood is the ideal solution for operations whose applications include robotic welding or manual weld cells. The Fume Hood’s low-profile provides greater installation flexibility than traditional canopy-style hoods and its engineered design provides effective weld fume collection in the most challenging environments. When paired with the optional weld curtains, the Fume Hood can be sized to reduce airflow requirements, ultimately lowering the overall cost of the entire dust collection system.

Heads up: NFPA 660 Standard for Combustible Dusts is coming

Article by: Jack Osborn

FPA committee member Jack Osborn provides an update on the upcoming consolidated combustible dust standard.

For a considerable time now, the NFPA has wanted to combine the five main commodity-specific combustible dust standards, 61, 484, 652, 654, and 664 (Food, Metals, Fundamentals, Chemical, and Wood) into a single standard resembling NFPA 70, the National Electric Code. During the last few years, this process has been ongoing and is now at the end of the First Draft Phase and moving into the Second Draft phase. Each “phase” has been designed to allow the public (and many NFPA committee members) to have direct input into the configuration and content of the proposed standard.

What to Look for in a Weld Fume Extractor

Article by: Chrissy Klocker

All forms of welding create fumes that can prove hazardous. You can greatly reduce exposure levels by properly ventilating your workspace. Don’t assume that using a fan, opening a window, or even welding outside will protect your welders adequately.
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists prefers fume extractors (also called dust or fume collectors) over natural ventilation for their ability to capture fumes near the source and before contaminants disperse throughout a facility.
While each welding facility is unique, the following questions will help you select the most appropriate fume extraction system for your operation and for your employees.

Explosion Protection System Deficiencies as Discovered Through Performing DHAs:
Part One - Venting

Dust collection systems play a critical role in minimizing combustible dust hazards in workplaces, but they are not without risk. Because of the collection of hazardous dust particles, these systems must be properly designed to protect personnel. While NFPA standards provide design requirements, hundreds of DHAs have shown that many explosion protection systems are deficient or dissing critical components.

Laser & Plasma Applications: Selecting a Dust Collection System

Thermal cutting applications, such as plasma and laser cutting, generate considerable levels of fume and particulate that may present a health risk to operators and be detrimental to cutting machinery.

Frequently, integrated dust collectors in cutting systems help reduce worker exposure to fume and help protect expensive machinery. When selecting and designing a dust collector, consideration of thermally generated dusts should include the filtration challenges for collectors due to particle size, loading, and combustible dust risks.

Dust Collection in the Canadian Food Industry

Dust collection in the Food Industry can be a complicated and perplexing topic. Proper facility maintenance is necessary in all areas of food manufacturing to ensure hygiene standards are met because a high-profile food handling scare can shift industry thinking. Understanding Connected Equipment

The industrial Internet of Things (IoT) has generated a lot of press, but still faces obstacles in adoption. Some of it stems from doubts about return on investment. IoT is often confused with automation systems, the expensive IT networks running large manufacturing operations. The expense and specialized personnel these systems require put them out of reach for many operations.

Internet connectivity is different—in how it works, the purpose it serves, and who can take advantage of it. It’s relatively affordable to install sensors on equipment and send data to the cloud, making its benefits available to manufacturers of all sizes.

Three Principles for Installing Your First Fume Collector

By Tom Miller, Donaldson Company & Jay Smith, Air Separation Technologies

AST Canada engineers evaluate plant conditions for Ontario Metal Fabrication Shop with multiple hazard challenges and design a complete dust collector system to increase air-quality and address local environmental concerns.

Challenges included reactive metals, submicronic dusts and a need to be user friendly across a large variety of jobs & fabrication equipment. The system had to be holistic in design to address the needs of several workstations and environments. Lastly, the system had to be easily maintained and cost effective.
